Participants in The Longest Walk 2 stayed in the Richmond area on the Memorial Day weekend. The Longest Walk 2 is a grassroots effort on a national level to bring attention to the environmental disharmony on Mother Earth and the effects of environmental destruction on Native American people as well as to raise awareness about the need for the protection of sacred sites as a means for cultural survival. They will arrive in Washington, D.C. on July 11 where walkers will bring their concerns to the federal government. Retired and Senior Volunteer Program was approached last week to help make its stay easier and restful. I'd like to thank everyone that extended a helping hand to this group during its stay here. Rural Metro donated many bandages and ointment. White Branch Church of the Brethren in Hagerstown and Rebecca Hershey from Gateway Vineyard Church for the food they donated from their food pantry. It was a pleasure to meet and coordinate needs with Diann Baker from First Assembly of God. Also all the RSVP volunteers that brought in treats for them to enjoy, cakes, cookies, snacks and numerous other needed items. Volunteer Lou Cooper and her daughter Patty helped deliver and pick up food last week. It is the good work people do when they hear of a need that makes Richmond the special place it is.
