The Longest Walk 2 is a five month long trans-continental journey on foot from San Francisco, CA to Washington, DC. The Longest Walk 2 marks the 30th anniversary of the first Longest Walk in 1978. Walkers departed the San Francisco Bay Area in February and are due to arrive in Washington, D.C. on July 11. There are two routes on the walk, a northern route and a southern route. Native Americans and their allies, including a group of Buddhist monks from Japan are walking with a message to protect
the environment & sacred sites. They are walking for cultural survival, youth empowerment and Native American rights. For more information about the Longest Walk 2 to to: www.longestwalk.org.
The need for funds is urgent. The walkers are facing tremendous adversity with the weather and lack of funds. Pennie Opal Plant, owner of Gathering Tribes, is sponsoring an auction on June 5 to benefit the Walk and walkers. The event will be held at Gathering Tribes located at 1573 Solano Avenue in Berkeley, California. The auction will begin with a wine and cheese reception at 5:30.
A silent auction will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., followed by a live auction from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Longest Walk 2 Coordinators, Morningstar Gali and Tony Gonzales, will give an update between 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
