South Route: May 14 -- Broken Bow |
|
The morning started off in Broken Bow, Oklahoma, with a thunder and lighting show directly above camp. The sky was pouring rain, creating floods in the streets and fields. It started with six of us at four in the morning and eventually dwindled down to just me. My whole walk consisted of intense prayer, remanicing of better days and talking to my lost friend. Today was the third anniversary of Monica McKay's passing, the day that I will never forget. The storm seemed to follow me the first thirty miles, washing away my tears. Then I crossed into Texas, full of warmth and wild flowers, all colors of the rainbow. Ten miles later at five in the afternoon, I arrived in DeKalb, Texas. I'm writing this to commemorate my best friend. I miss her and always will. Monica McKay, I love you.

Well good evening folks, How ya'll doing??
Today was beautiful. We awoke to the sound of soft rains and clapping thunder, we opened our eyes only to see flashing skies and dark grey clouds covering our warmth we call the sun, joonaei (which means sun in Dine). A voice pulled me out of a tripped out dream of in lala land where faries play fully wander through mushroom fields and butterfly flowers. Saw red horses gracefully running through an open meadow so green and lush. A voice to familiar "your shoes are wet. get up." took awhile for me to awake but we gathered our strength and sat up, it was cold so we sat around with blankets discussing our plans for the walk ahead minutes passed. then our day began. the rain began pouring. all the walkers packed up,loaded up, and left. the early morning walkers were on the road and we missed breakfast. circle took place in the gym. a long circle as usual. we drove out to where the early morning walkers made it to. Bonita walk the last three miles in the pouring rain, what a strong woman. the mid-nite walkers rested in the head honcho's van, (that would be Dennis Banks, the famous native) planning another 24 hour walk. the day dragged on, a little tears here an there but lots of laughter and smiles. Finally our journey brought us to DeKalib, Texas. to the horses we went but i was scared to touch the horses. conquer our fear right and yes i did, i touched the hoses, all thanks to my buddy Urvin. There's lots of horses here, all the same color but none the less beautiful. the rain calmed down, as we unloaded the vans and got our stuff set. circle time!! we discussed the days and read an article and drew in the sand with our toes. dennis asked what i was drawing and i said happily a smiley face wanna see?? but thats not all, we, meaning me and Urvin walked to get some milk for ben (todays cook). at the store we were asked to fill out a raffle for free gas, would've helped the walk but were not locals, then the bag boy wanted to carry our stuff for us. that was a good laugh.... then with groceries and all we headed to the pizza place and ate and laughed about goosebumps and what not....^-^ on our way back to camp we talked and laughed, picked flowers and talked to some locals. now here we sit writing and drawing by the flashlights as everybody sleeps. ready for another adventerous day. oh yeah forgot to mention, we took our showers in cold, cold, really cold water. nothing like cold water to toughen the body ^-^ the end
