Handshakes and Hugs on Southern Walk 2-16-08

After a long day of walking, Dennis Banks had all walkers form a circle and held a small meeting to recap the days events. He then had all eagle staff carriers proceed to the lodge where each staff was carefully placed to rest, drink and have some spirit plates. At the end of the meeting Dennis suggested closing in a traditional handshake circle.

This provide a great opportunity to take photos of ...well....handshakes and hugs...something this world needs more of. As I looked through the lens of the camera I saw all colors, religions, ages and sexes greeting each other with respect, and admiration for each others ways. (Wow I thought, what a concept- I know many businesses in Detroit that could USE this teaching (hint hint) - businesses I NO longer work for).

There they were smiling, shaking hand or bowing down as in Japan. Some started hugging after the handshake and I found that human act to be one that is natural and needed and not seen enough in this world.

The following photos are of just these acts: Handshakes and hugs.....beautiful and healing.

I hope you think about this- as stated in Moses' Brings Plenty First Nations Video- "the cause of most conflicts today is from failure to understand a different culture."- well, here's a starting point- say "hello" look them in the eye, shake their hand or do their greeting from their culture and talk to them, and then perhaps a hug....its not so hard. All life is Sacred. All four directions.

I was inspired- Miigwetch, Pilamaya, Koyana, Thanks!
~Brita
